EARTHQUAKE
UPDATE:
2
months ago, news from around the world was reporting an
earthquake in Hawaii. Early news reports seemed to make
more of it than was actually the case, but soon all was well
and back to normal.
The quake was centered just off the north Kona coast of the
big island of Hawaii deep in the ocean. Geologists explain
that as the big island grows from it volcanic activity. It
creates extra weight on the earth's crust and every 20 years
or so, the island tends to settle a little, causing earthquakes.
Major damage statewide was slight, but every island
experienced some good shaking. Hawaii electricity is
provided by local generators which automatically shut down
if the ground shakes, so many areas lost power. By the end
of the day most of the generators' motion sensors were reset
and power was back on.
The only lingering damage is at the Mauna Kea Resort,
located on the big island right next to the epicenter of the
quake. Engineers have determined that roof trusses shifted
and must be repaired before the resort can reopen.
